FREETOWN LUNGI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

 

Freetown's Lungi International Airport is located across the Sierra Leone River, eight miles to the north of downtown Freetown. It is operated by the Sierra Leone Airports Authority which has made major improvements to the terminal building over the past few years.

General Waiting HallThis is a new extension to the Terminal Building to provide a comfortable shelter for travellers and well-wishers, prior to checking in or immediately after Customs formalities upon arrival. The facilities found in this area include the following:

  • Ticketing Desks, for Coach, Ferry, Helicopter, Hovercraft, and Taxi services
  • Restaurants, Snack Bars
  • Shops/boutiques
  • Postal Services
  • Travel Agency Offices

Departures Wing The following amenities are found in the Departure Wing:

  • Duty Free Shop
  • Restaurants and Bars
  • Two spacious General Lounges; on the ground floor and the first floor
  • First Class/Business Class lounge
  • VVIP Lounge; for use by Senior Government Officials/Diplomats
  • Business Centre; providing telephone, internet, fax and photocopying facilities

Arrivals Wing:

  • VVIP Lounge; for use by Senior Government Officials/Diplomats

DUTY FREE SHOPS

Lungi Airport boasts a superb Duty Free shopping facility (Image) located on the ground floor at the departure lounge. Available to both departing and transit passengers. Ii is offers a wide variety of goods at competitive prices. It opens from the first flight until the last, seven days a week and accepts both foreign currencies and Leones.

Airport Information Desk: The Freetown International Airport has an Information Desk (Image) run by Sierra Leone Airports Authority (SLAA), where the public can obtain information on flight departures and arrivals. It is manned by the Public Relations Department of SLAA. They are always on hand to deal with enquiries and give advice about services at the airport.

Business Facilities: A business centre operated by Kunstella Enterprises is situated at the arrival side of the waiting hall. It provides telephone, fax and photocopy services.

Snack Bar and Restaurants: Situated in the Waiting Hall, is a snack bar run by Kabaslot Enterprises which caters for both passengers and well wishers. On the Waving Gallery, there is also a bar and restaurant run by Doorway and Grill Restaurant.

Lost and Found Baggage / Property: Passenger whose baggage(s) is mislaid it is sent to Lost and Found which is located in the Arrival Hall. Passenger whose checked baggage is short landed should report to lost and Found Desk. This service is operated by the ground handling agent.

Porters and Trolleys: Self help baggage trolleys can be found in the baggage reclaim hall and departure waiting hall and available for passengers’ use free of charge. However, those who want to make use of Porters, they are also available. They wear pink overall uniform and they charge Le1,000.00 per luggage.

Toilets / Washroom / Restroom These are available in the Waiting Hall, Departure and Arrival Lounges.

Exchange Bureau: An exchange bureau is located after the Customs Hall in the Arrival Area for the smooth facilitation of foreign / local currency transactions.

Marie Indigo Boutique: This boutique specializes in African made goods portraying the culture of Sierra Leone. It is situated at the departure side of the waiting hall. You can find the following items in the shop: Leather bags , Ebony shadows , Carvings (Image) , Ladies and gents gara dresses Sea shells, and many more.

Medical Facilities There are two well equipped hospitals within a close proximity to the airport, with doctors 24 hours on duty. There is also a well equipped health clinic within the airport perimeter with a doctor during the day time.

Spectators Viewing Facility: The public can access aircraft viewing from the first floor of the arrival hall through the waiting hall on the arrival side. From their, visitors can watch the activities on the runway and apron.

Postal Services: Sierra Leone Postal Services is available to meet your postal needs while transiting at the airport. Besides the processing of both incoming and out-going international mails, they also sell post cards, postage stamps, accepting and paying of money orders, etc.

AIRPORT TRANSFERS

On arrival, passengers proceed by bus (with ferry) to downtown Freetown. Additionally the hovercraft service between Maheru Beach and Aberdeen will be reintroduced.
